What is IRC?
IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is a multi-user, multi-channel chatting system. Imagine sitting in front of your computer and "talking" through typed messages with either one person or many other people from all over the Internet, all in real time! Best of all, once you get set up, chatting on IRC is totally free!
How do I connect?
The most common way to connect to IRC is through the use of a client or program. The easiest client to use for beginners is mIRC.
There are three things that you need to have to connect to an IRC network. The first thing is the most important, your nickname. This identifies you to other people on the network and can help to tell people who you are. Most nicks are very creative and unique.
The second thing you have to have is the name of the IRC server you that you want to connect to. The servername for this website's IRC network is irc.myanythingchristian.com, but there are TONS of different networks to choose from.
The last thing that you need to know is what port to connect on. Most servers use the default port of 6667. That is the port MyAnythingChristian uses to connect on. However, some networks use different ports.
Once you get setup and running you can join channels or rooms. The main channel for this website is #MyAnythingChristian but you can see a list of all channels on the network by typing /list. The command to join a channel is /join #MyAnythingChristian.
I hope this has helped introduce people to IRC and if you need more assistance on how to connect there are MANY tutorials available on the web. I'm hoping that someone will write a more step-by-step tutorial here!
